Tindari - The Madonna is located at Tindari which is on the other side of the island. This was my third experience at being a passenger whilst driving on the opposite side of theroad (second with Lynne) and I can tell you it was probably worse than thefirst time. Although I was the one with the experience of driving bigger cars equipped with power steering and ABS brakes Ididnt have an international licence, Lynne did so she was the designated driver and I thenavigator. The map and instructions the car rental place printed off for ust o get to the Madonna were in Italian. It took Lynne a while to get used to the feel of the car as well as sticking to theright side of the road and not getting to close to the left side. So even though I was the navigator I was not game to take my eyes of the road let alone try and decipher the map, so my stress levels were pretty high. To make matters worse when we got off the freeway onto the road that went to Patti it was a very narrow winding road which went up a huge mountain and of course down the other side. By the time we reached Patti I was an absolute wreck. Firstly I have trouble with heights and as I was on the side that was close to the downside of the mountain which had a small rock fence between 18 inches and 2 ft as the guard rail and most of the time it felt like we were only a matter of inches away. I probably used the brakes more than Lynne did. Lynne was looking around and said look at the views arentthey stunning. I replied I cant look at the views I need to watch where we are driving. At onestage we went around a corner and I swear we were only a whiskers breath away from going into the wall, I nearly jumped into Lynnes lap. My head was throbbing and I felt ill. She laughed and I snapped at her and said it is no laughingmatter, she replied if Idont laugh I will cry. I said well I am at that point. The rest of the way we drove in silence. I have never been so pleased to reach somewhere in all my life. I didnt really care that we had parked some kms from the town centre. I just wanted to get out and walk.
Well we walked and we walked trying to find the town centre and the visitor information centre so that we could get some accommodation. Finally after walking for about an hour and all up hill we finally found it. The staff were very friendly and pointed us in the direction of some potential accommodation a B&B Casa Rubi. They also told us that we could take a bus back up the mount to Tindari where theMadonna was. Thank god there was no way Iwas going to do the trip again in the car. I would have walked.
